Our skin-care non-negotiable will always be sunscreen, regardless of your age, skin type, or season (yes, even if you’re indoors). The best sunscreens for mature skin, however, offer more than just sun protection—they’re also the key to unlocking brighter, smoother skin. Beyond providing broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, these formulas are chock-full of nourishing ingredients (Niacinamide! Ceramides! Hyaluronic acid!) that can help soften signs of skin aging, like fine lines, sun spots, and laxity.

Mind you, we celebrate aging in all of its forms, but we also believe in investing in your skin care and choosing heavy-hitting ingredients that do more than simply hydrate. So we tapped editors and board-certified dermatologists to break down formulas that particularly work well with mature skin and won't accentuate anything you'd prefer not to shine a spotlight on. Let's dive in!

Our Top Sunscreens for Mature Skin

Best Mineral Overall: SkinCeuticals Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50

SkinCeuticals Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 black bottle of sunscreen on light gray background

SkinCeuticals

Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50

Why it's worth it: We’ll be the first to admit that mineral sunscreen generally has a reputation problem—great protection, less-than-great wearability—but SkinCeuticals’ Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 is for anyone who’s struggled to find a formula that doesn’t leave a white cast. Yes, you’re getting that reliable broad-spectrum coverage from 15% zinc oxide (plus titanium dioxide), but the difference is in how it shows up on skin: They’re using a specific type of zinc oxide called Z-Cote, which is a microfine version with much smaller particles that’s designed to look more transparent on skin, a.k.a. the reason this formula is able to blend in so sheer.

Beyond UV protection, it relies on tried-and-true skin-care staples that are helpful for mature skin. Niacinamide and panthenol to support the barrier, calm visible redness, and even out tone—while the lightweight, almost serum-like texture layers seamlessly without pilling or feeling heavy. “This is great for mature skin since it adds the benefit of being broad spectrum and integrating actives to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration,” says Jane Yoo, MD, a dual board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. It’s so seamless to apply, you might actually catch yourself reapplying without a second thought—which, when it comes to sunscreen, is kind of the whole point.

Tester feedback from contributing commerce writer Christa Joanna Lee

“I had a true wait, this is mineral? moment with SkinCeuticals’ Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50. It pours out like a lightweight serum—slightly opaque at first, then it disappears completely into my skin without a trace. True to form, the brand packs in plenty of nourishing skin-care ingredients, and makeup layers over it effortlessly. Now I just need this in a body lotion version.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Best Chemical Overall: Bioré UV Aqua Rich Weightless Moisturizer SPF 50

Bioré

UV Aqua Rich Weightless Moisturizer SPF 50

Why it's worth it: You probably know Bioré for those iconic nose strips—the ones that practically vacuum out every pore—so it tracks that they wouldn’t turn around and make a sunscreen that undoes all that hard work. The UV Aqua Rich Weightless Moisturizer SPF 50 (a 2024 Allure Best of Beauty winner) is a lightweight, breathable chemical formula that won’t clog pores or feel heavy on skin. It gives you reliable broad-spectrum protection, but the real win (aside from the budget-friendly price that makes it easy to stock up) is the deep hydration it provides.

As Geeta Yadav, MD, board-certified dermatologist based in Toronto, Canada, notes, it “contains glycerin and sodium hyaluronate to pull water into the skin without weighing it down,” so you’re getting that lightweight moisture alongside your SPF—enough that you can probably skip your morning face cream. One thing to keep in mind: It does contain added fragrance, so if your skin runs sensitive, it’s worth patch-testing first before slathering on.

Tester feedback from managing editor Alessandra Foresto

“I truly use this sunscreen up to the last drop (I'm due for a restock!). That's because the rumors (and social videos) are true; this sunscreen is superior. Its gel-like, watery texture gives your skin a glowy finish, but doesn't feel greasy. The SPF doesn't travel into your eyes or make them sting. And it doesn't leave a white cast behind on my brown skin. The formula is so lightweight, but it contains hyaluronic acid, so it feels super moisturizing and gives you a nice dewy look. My husband is also a huge fan of this SPF because it spreads nicely over his beard without leaving behind flakes or peeling. He uses it on his body too and finds it doesn't give white T-shirts that yellowy tint that some sunscreens leave behind.” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

Best Under Makeup: Chanel UV Essentiel

Chanel UV Essentiel SPF 50 flat white tube on light gray background

Why it's worth it: Some sunscreens demand a lot of rubbing; this one melts into skin on contact. Our tester described Chanel’s UV Essentiel as “beautifully ribbony,” and that silky, glide-on texture is a big part of what makes it especially flattering on mature skin. There’s the protection itself—a full lineup of chemical filters doing the heavy lifting against UV damage—but it’s everything layered around it that really sets this formula apart.

Hydrators like glycerin and sodium hyaluronate team up with cushiony emollients—think squalane, moringa oil, and camellia seed oil—so it smooths over dryness instead of clinging to it. Antioxidants like blue ginger and licorice add a layer of defense against pollution and oxidative stress that accelerate the signs of aging. It leaves behind a soft, slightly luminous finish that blurs rather than emphasizes texture, and it layers nicely under foundation and other makeup without pilling or settling into fine lines.

Tester feedback from senior commerce director Shanna Shipin

“My skin is so dry and textured that I can't use a sunscreen without hydrating properties, and this Chanel UV Essentiel is the answer. It's a beautiful ribbony, almost like a lightweight moisturizer that glides onto the skin and absorbs quickly. It leaves you with a lovely sheen, but there's absolutely no residue, film, or tack. It's also chemical sunscreen, so there's no hint of white cast. It wears so well under makeup and does not pill, whether I use a skin tint or actual foundation. It's elegance and performance in one little tube.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Best Tinted: Isdin Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral Sunscreen

Isdin

Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral Sunscreen

Why it’s worth it: If you’re looking for a sunscreen that offers just a touch of coverage—enough to blur and even things out without crossing into makeup territory—Isdin’s Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral Sunscreen is a solid pick. It’s packed with photolyase enzymes that, according to West Islip, New York-based board-certified dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla, MD, “improve DNA damage after exposure to UV light,” which means you may see fewer signs of uneven tone, rough texture, and fine lines. The formula also features firming peptides and antioxidants to help protect against future sun damage while visibly improving hyperpigmentation and the look of fine lines. The sheer tint doesn’t quite qualify as a skin tint, but it gives your complexion a subtle boost of radiance (and honestly, most days, that’s all we need).

Tester feedback from contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai

“My mineral sunscreens have to be tinted—I have too much pigment in my skin to deal with the chalkiness otherwise. I love that this pulls double-duty to not only protect my skin from sun damage but also actively works to even out my skin tone. That’s a big deal since I, like most people with deeper skin, am very prone to dark spots. Plus, it smells and feels like nothing.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Shiseido

Urban Environment Vita-Clear Sunscreen

Why it's worth it: The bouncy formula behind Shiseido’s Urban Environment Vita-Clear Sunscreen, a 2023 Best of Beauty Award winner, delivers your daily SPF with a built-in dose of vitamin C, so you’re not just protecting skin—you’re actively brightening dark spots and hyperpigmentation, too. This antioxidant helps even tone, boost radiance, and soften the look of pores over time, while hyaluronic acid pulls in and holds onto moisture for a plumper, more hydrated feel. The water-in-gel formula combines the benefits of a water-based sunscreen with an oil phase to create a nongreasy, easily absorbed final product.

Tester feedback from senior beauty editor Jesa Marie Calaor

"As the label reads, it contains vitamin C and licorice, which is perfect for upping my radiance and tackling any dark spots, as well as moisture-attracting hyaluronic acid. I noticed that the gel melted down into an extremely slippery liquid. I let it sit for a few minutes and my skin felt velvety soft with an ever-so-slight slickness. My complexion looked diffused—as if I had a soft, blurring filter on my skin—and glowy when the sun hit it." —Jesa Marie Calaor, senior beauty editor

Round Lab

Birch Moisturizing Sunscreen UVLock SPF 45+

Why we love it: K-beauty sunscreens have a way of turning a daily chore into a skin-care ritual, and Round Lab Birch Moisturizing Sunscreen UVLock SPF 45+ has earned its viral status, thanks to its silky formula. “It’s a moisturizing sunscreen that is formulated with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and antioxidants to hydrate and soothe the skin,” says Y. Claire Chang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “It blends in easily and layers beautifully with other skin-care products and makeup.” The texture is more like a dewy moisturizer than your average SPF, thanks to birch sap and skin-quenching humectants. Best for Dull Skin: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 white bottle on light gray background

Why it's worth it: Allure editors never stop raving about the Best of Beauty-winning EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, and James Y. Wang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Los Angeles, loves it, too. He calls this mineral-based facial sunscreen "one of the lightest and silkiest skin-care products on the market." Its star ingredient, niacinamide, is an essential part of this formula for its complexion-brightening, moisture-replenishing properties. To tackle dryness-related wrinkles, this formula also features hydrating hyaluronic acid to plump skin and "fill in" fine lines. Though it’s ultra-hydrating, this sunscreen’s matte finish, oil-free formulation, and inclusion of lactic acid—a skin-tightening and pore-unclogging alpha hydroxy acid that’s gentler than other exfoliating options—make it a great option for people with acne-prone and oily skin types, too. (Menopause acne is real.) Since we’re on the topic of skin types, those with sensitive skin will love that it’s fragrance-free, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does sunscreen benefit mature skin?

On top of preventing issues like skin cancer and sunburn, Margarita Lolis, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Hackensack, New Jersey, says applying (and reapplying) a broad-spectrum sunscreen will minimize the appearance of concerns like fine lines, sun spots, and decreased skin laxity. "Unprotected sun exposure drastically accelerates the appearance of aging skin," Dr. Lolis explains. "While mature skin is already experiencing these effects absent sun exposure, not protecting your skin with sunscreen daily only sends the aging process into hyperdrive," she adds.

What ingredients should I look for in sunscreen for mature skin?

You'll want to look for a sunscreen formulated with antioxidants, the top-tier one being a stabilized form of vitamin C. This is because antioxidants neutralize environmental aggressors, including pollution, infrared rays, and visible light; therefore, they boost the efficacy of your sunscreen's protective measures. On top of that, studies have shown that when vitamin C is used topically, it can help accelerate the skin's production of collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that help keep skin plump and firm. By promoting collagen production, topical vitamin C can help prevent signs of skin aging, including fine lines and reduced elasticity.

Another antioxidant known for its skin-boosting benefits is niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3. Like its counterpart, vitamin C, niacinamide has a myriad of benefits, including evening tone, brightening your complexion, and minimizing the appearance of pores. Dr. Garshick previously told Allure that this antioxidant can also diminish fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to its collagen-boosting properties. Most of the formulas above are also spiked with other plumping additives, like hydrating hyaluronic acid.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best sunscreens for mature skin, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
